Floretum is participating in a National Garden Club program, Penny Pines, which is a partnership with the U.S. Forest Service to replant national forest land devastated by wildfires. Donations of pocket change collected by the club at board and general membership meetings are sent to NGC in $68 increments, a historical number that represents the cost of replanting ten acres back in 1941 when the program began. Today that amount will allow for reforestation of about one acre which will provide “soil protection, watershed protection, soil stabilization, future harvestable timber, as well as beauty and shade for recreation.” Floretum’s first donation was designated for the Wenatchee National Forest and was marked as a memoriam gift in the name of Dorothy Wilson, a Floretum member who passed away in 2015.
